houston

**Here at Cheap Insurance, we periodically post articles about some of our favorite cities, pointing out attractions and events that we (and hopefully you) find interesting.**

Astronauts, or Cowboys? Why decide? Houston has it all!

From rodeos to rockets, ballet to baseball, there is no way to be bored in this giant Texas town.

Incorporated in 1837 and named after the popular general, Sam Houston, the city is now the fourth most populated in the nation (behind Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York).  Famous for its association with NASA and the Apollo program (“Houston….we have a problem”), the city also has a thriving art and theater scene, over 300 parks, dozens of museums, and the world’s largest concentration of medical research and healthcare institutions.

With over 90 different languages spoken in the city, Houston is extremely diverse and multicultural, due in part to its concentration of academic institutions, its port, and its strong industries. Of note are Houston’s Chinatown and Mahatma Ghandi District.

The city has long supported the arts as an economic booster. It is one of the few U.S. cities with resident companies in all of the major performing arts disciplines: The Houston Grand Opera, The Houston Ballet, The Houston Symphony Orchestra, and The Alley Theatre.

Some other notable events and attractions with cheap admission are:

The Houston Auto Show has run for over 30 years, bringing the latest and greatest models from all of the major automobile manufacturers. There’s also a “kids fun zone” for children 12 and under, with a 30 foot slide and numerous car related arts and crafts activities.

On the quirkier side, there’s the annual Art Car Parade, in May of each year. If you want to see shark cars, VW bugs joined at the roof (wonder what kind of insurance coverage they have), or any other crazy vehicle you can think of (and some you can’t), this is the event for you.

The famous Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been around since 1932 and has since raised over 350 million dollars for charity. Along with the horse show, livestock show, and world-class rodeo, they coordinate year-round concerts from some of the hottest musical and theater acts.

All this is merely the briefest of overviews, but it should give you a taste of what “Space City” has to offer. Houston should definitely make any traveler’s list.
