Insurance Facts

The most recent available data reports that the average 12-month car insurance premium in Massachusetts was $1,604. That's a pretty steady increase over the past few years, making it more important than ever to look for all the options for cheap insurance Massachusetts has to offer. Massachusetts allows for two different kinds of insurance: policy holder only (insuring only named individuals) and household coverage that covers yourself and any additional members of your household. The most recent statistics show that only 4.5% of drivers in Massachusetts are uninsured, which is FAR better than most states.

Statewide Stats

There are close to 5 million registered vehicles in Massachusetts, with 4.7 million licensed drivers. Most traffic is obviously centered around the major urban centers like Boston, but since the population (6.7 million) is so densely packed in the state (only 10,555 square miles), traffic can get bad no matter where you live. During the 19th century, Massachusetts became a national leader in the Industrial Revolution, producing scores of factories (primarily in the textile and shoe industries, as well as paper and tools) that helped the state's economy grow rapidly. Because it is a coastal state, shipping was a primary economic industry as well. Today the major economies are higher education, biotechnology, finance, health care, and tourism. There are 13 Fortune 500 companies based in the state, and Massachusetts also boasts the sixth-largest concentration of millionaires in the nation.

DUI Information

There were 9,887 DUI arrests in 2011 (the most recent statistic we could find). In 2012, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, there were 123 drunk driving fatalities. While interlock devices are not required for first time offenses (yet), they are required for repeat offenders.

If you are convicted of a first-time DUI offense, you can expect to pay between $500 and $5,00 in fees, spend up to 30 months in jail, and have your license suspended for up to 1 year.

More information on the state's enforcement of drunk driving can be found here.

The Bottom Line

Even if you don't live in on of Massachusetts major urban areas, rates are still higher than average. Because of it's location on the coast, a lot of traffic passes through this little state. This means a lot of time on the road, with an increased risk of traffic collision.

Rates have fluctuated a great deal over the past 5 years, so we recommend re-evaluating your policy at least twice a year.
