About West Covina

Early on West Covina’s economy rested on walnut groves, mainly because of the large amount of underground water available. While waiting for the Walnut trees to mature, beans, potatoes and other crops were planted between the rows. The growers also planted Palms and other trees along the streets in an effort to beautify the growing community.

West Covina was incorporated as an independent city in 1923 to prevent the city of Covina from building a sewage farm in the area. Walnut groves and orange groves continued to flourish during the subsequent decades. As a result of expansion after World War II, West Covina became one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities between 1950 and 1960. During 1955 it was the fastest growing city in the United States. In 1950 its population was 4,499 and 10 years later it was more than 10 times that, 50,645.

West Covina was attractive to young families coming into Southern California from across the United States. This was mainly due to the fact that it was close to the city jobs, but still far enough away to have a country cost of living. The city also experienced a period of racial imbalance that did not change until the early 1960s.

Many development projects continue to contribute to the economic growth of the city. This includes the West Covina Fashion Plaza, the revitalization of the older sections of the shopping center, and several major office buildings. The city has also added two new community shopping centers, freestanding retail developments, restaurants, residential projects, and the Auto Plaza.
