However, sometimes our budget gets in the way of being truly free. We at Cheap Insurance want to help you slash the cost of cheap motorcycle insurance by shopping around for you.

Before you head out on the road or on your commute to work, take a few minutes to make sure you’re properly covered – literally and financially – if the worst occurs.

A good motorcycle insurance policy is not something to be taken lightly when the only thing between you and the highway is your bike.

If you may want more motorcycle insurance you can always add on to your existing policy.

To keep your premiums down, you can ask for a higher deductible. There are many ways to save you money if you do want that full coverage you deserve.

Let’s take a look at some of the California state requirements for motorcycle insurance.

California Requirements

California requires motorcycle riders to carry the same amount of liability coverage as drivers:

  • $15,000 per person/$30,000 per occurrence for bodily injury liability
  • $5,000 for property damage liability.

But minimal coverage won’t pay for the loss of your bike or your medical expenses. Cheap Insurance is an insurance broker offering some of the lowest rates available for your motorcycle. Whether you’re looking for collision, passenger injury protection, or comprehensive coverage, Cheap Insurance provides access to all the major insurance providers, at significantly lower prices.

Here are the other options for full coverage:

  • Collision coverage will protect you and your own bike in case of an accident. Having the minimum coverage only protects the other party involved.
  • Comprehensive coverage includes theft and other types of damages not incurred from an accident.
  • Uninsured Motorist coverage makes sure that you are covered even when the other party is not. More times than you might think, a driver or rider does not carry the proper insurance.
  • Towing and Roadside Assistance is a great idea. You don’t want to get stuck on the side of the road. With this coverage you could be covered or reimbursed for a tow or other emergency help.
  • Gear is another option. You could be covered for your helmet and safety gear which isn’t cheap to buy.
  • Medical coverage is a separate coverage which just pays for medical expenses. Many times in an accident, the motorcycle rider will be worse off than the auto driver.

Laws and Facts

If you are knew to owning a motorcycle, here are some interesting facts and laws that may help you when deciding on insurance.

  2. The minimum coverage for your motorcycle policy is the same as a car in the state of California. As stated above, there are minimum requirements, but you will probably want more than just the minimum.
  3. Your liability coverage does not cover you and your own bike. California wants to make sure that the at-fault party is the one who pays. The liability insurance only covers the other party involved.
  4. You are required by state law to carry your proof of insurance on your person while riding. You may want to find a nice little spot on your motorcycle to keep your proof of insurance and registration. Fines for not carrying this could be around $200.
  5. If you are in a crash and get hurt, but do not carry insurance, you will not be allowed to claim non-economic damages. This means you cannot get pain and suffering payment. This law came about around 20 years ago to crack down on uninsured motorists.
  6. Standard insurance policies do not covered modified bikes. You will need additional coverage for this and we at Cheap Insurance can help you get it.
  7. There is no need for motorcycle insurance for your dirt bike. You also cannot ride your dirt bike on the streets like a regular motorcycle. These are recreational only.
  8. If you cause damage of over $750 in an accident, your insurance company is legally required to report it to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  9. Evading a Police Officer could mean a fine of $2,000 dollars up to $10,000 and jail time.
  10. Lane splitting with your motorcycle is completely legal in the state of California.
  11. Riding a motorcycle while intoxicated will get you a DUI. Just like when driving a car, if you are over the legal limit, you could get busted. Don’t drink and drive.
  12. If you want to save money on your premiums, choose a higher deductible.
  13. There are many factors that influence your insurance rate such as: where you live, your credit score, and what kind of bike you ride.
  14. How much you ride your bike could affect the outcome of your insurance premium. Is it your full-time vehicle or do you mainly ride on weekends? These are questions you could be asked when shopping for insurance.
