It’s the time of the month men dread most.  They sweat it out, knowing that it’s always looming over them.  As soon as it’s over they breathe a sigh of relief, all the while knowing that their relief will be short-lived.  Because that certain time of the month is going to come around again, rearing its ugly head.

Time to pay the auto insurance bill.

What a drain auto insurance can be.  Even if you’ve been paying it for years, it can still amaze you. Even if you don’t own a flashy car or live in a high-risk area, even if all these things are true there’s a chance you still pay out the nose for your auto insurance, and this is the case for so many other drivers.

And then what happens in the case of an accident? The insurance company, those lovely souls to whom you’ve been shelling out your life savings for who knows how many months now, will try every way in the book to slip out of approving your claim.

Of course there’s also the chance that the other party involved in your accident has no insurance.  What a treat.

Why is it always this way?

You know what, it’s time for a new law here.  Auto insurance should be free.  Yes, you read that right.  Free.  Can you imagine?

There would be so may fewer people forced to drive illegally because they have to get to work but car insurance is too much for them to afford.  Granted, this would take money out of the state’s pockets since there would be fewer fines paid by uninsured drivers – but do you think anyone will be losing sleep over that? Doubtful.  They’d probably just be forced to raise taxes – what a surprise.  They’ll use any excuse.

Free auto insurance would probably go a long way towards helping prison overcrowding.  Uninsured drivers wouldn’t be getting locked up because they drove with a suspended license.  There would be lots more room for hardened criminals to spread out and get more comfortable.  And hey, if the state is paying less for prisoners that “fewer fines being paid” thing might even balance itself out.

You know which industry would really benefit from this new law? Auto mechanics! Folks would finally be able to get their car properly fixed after an accident rather than just covering it in electrical tape and driving it around anyway.  It would be a boon for auto parts suppliers, too.  This could even create new jobs, come to think of it…

And you know who would probably have to take those jobs? The people working at those “We’ll get you insured for less!” companies.  Granted, you’d miss their awful, cheesy commercials, which play during Judge Judy…but you should be doing something more productive than watching Judge Judy anyway.

Of course, the cheap insurance companies are doing something right at the moment – since, for now, cheap insurance is the next best thing to free.  At the moment there’s no choice but to be insured, so the cheaper the better.

But just think how much better things could be.  More jobs, less crowded prisons, no more annoying commercials during daytime TV.  This seems like a win-win situation, doesn’t it? And all it would take is the passing of a very simple law.  Once lawmakers and insurance companies read the pros and cons of this, it’ll be a no-brainer for them.

So start daydreaming about what you’ll do with all that extra money.
