The moments right after an accident can be a confusing time. It is a time when you are trying to figure out how badly you and your passengers are hurt and how much damage has been done to your car. While this period of time can be a blur of twisted metal, broken glass and fear it shouldn’t be an excuse for you to avoid taking the correct measures to protect you and your family. Below are the do’s and don’ts of what you need to do in an accident.

1. DO call for help if you or your passengers are in need of medical attention.
2. After the accident, DO make sure that you call the police. The police can document the accident and pull together all the facts that your auto insurance company is going to need.
3. DO call the insurance agency and report the accident to them as soon as possible.
4. DO exchange all vital information with the other driver involved in the accident. This information should include name, address, telephone number, license and registration numbers and driver’s license number.
5. DO take pictures of the accident scene yourself. In fact, keep a disposable camera in your car at all times just for this purpose. Having scenes of the accident is often beneficial to insurance agencies.
6. DO take notes about the specifics of the accident. This can include homemade diagrams of the accident scene, the time, the date and the weather conditions. This information will also help your insurance company.
7. DO call your attorney to make sure that you are protected legally and are aware of your personal responsibilities under the law in that situation.
