5 best cities for car insurance

Thursday, July 5, 2012

Having car insurance is a necessity but if you live in a city with a higher-than-normal car accident rate, then it’s that much more important to make sure you are covered and taken care of. Even if you have cheap insurance, if you live in one of these cities, you’re going to be thankful for it.

We can’t all live in Fort Collins, Colorado, where the average driver gets into a car accident only once every fourteen years. Most of us live in places where it happens much more often. Here are the five cities where it happens the most:

Providence, Rhode Island

It might be in the smallest state, but Providence is home to one of the most accident-prone road systems in the nation. With an estimated population of 172K, the average time between accidents is once every six years. The chance of having an accident in Providence as compared to an average city is 66.7% higher. Don’t come anywhere near this city in your car unless you’ve got quality insurance.

Newark, New Jersey

With a population of 284K, there are bound to be a lot of traffic accidents in this New Jersey metropolis. However, you might not be aware that your chances of having a car accident increase by 70.8% once you enter this cramped city with older roads and outdated traffic lights. You’re also dealing with a lot of commuters coming off the New Jersey Turnpike and speeding like they’re still on it.

Glendale, California

Los Angeles might not be one of the worst cities for car accidents, if you can believe it, but this city just outside of LA makes the list. You are 80.8% more likely to be involved in a car accident here than in a normal city, which is crazy. The problem is that there’s really no other way to get around besides driving and with so many people commuting to and from Los Angeles and Burbank, there’s never a dull moment on the roads of Glendale. The average driver here gets into an accident once every five-and-a-half years.

Baltimore, Maryland

It’s tough these days for the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland. The crime rate is extremely high here and tensions aren’t helped by the fact that Baltimore is the second-worst city in America when it comes to car crashes. In a city of 637, 000, you’re 88.7% more likely to get into a car accident here than elsewhere. With the tricky roads near the Harbor and the tough roads as you move away from the water, driving in the Baltimore area can be a dicey endeavor. Keep your insurance handy since Maryland has some very high insurance premiums.

Washington, D.C.

Baltimore and D.C. have always had a bit of a Beltway rivalry and that’s no different when it comes to car accident rates. The Nation’s Capitol is the champion of bad drivers in America. With a population clocking in just under 600,000, the average driver gets into an accident once every 4.8 years. On average, D.C. drivers pay over $2,000 in insurance premiums, so if you can find cheap insurance that protects you, you better take advantage of it. Just to put things in perspective, you are 100% more likely to get into a car accident here than in an average city.

You never want to take any chances with your car insurance no matter where you live. However, if you live in or around any of these cities, make sure you and your loved ones are covered and prepared for city driving.
